What is Kyoto Tanabata 京の七夕とは？

Kyono Tanabata 京の七夕

Kyono Tanabata is an event takes place in August, between Gion Matsuri and Gozan Okuribi. It consists of many events in many places.

Tanabata no Sekku 七夕の節句

In the ancient times, Japanese people have a custom called Tanabata. In Tanabata, young ladies make kimono as a dedication to Shinto deity and pray for rich cultivation and dispelling evil spirits.

On the other hand, there was a custom called Kikoten in ancient China. In Kikoden, people make an altar and put strings, clothes, needles on it to pray for their improvement of handicraft skill to Vega.

In addition to it, ancient Chinese people believed Altair brought prosperity in agriculture.

They thought Vega and Altair meets on the 7th of July in the ancient Chinese lunar calender because these two stars shine so bright on the day.

These facts were put together and developed into Tanabana, or Star festival in Japan.

Vega and Altair meets each other on 7th of July (around 7th of August in Gregorian calender), and make wish upon these stars.

The custom to write wish on bamboo leaves was introduced in the Edo period. The bamboo was inspired by bamboos decorated on Chinowa, the wreath get rid of evil sprits we have.

Chinowa is a big wreath. A story about Somin Shorai says that the Deity save us from malady with it. We always find it in June and July but we also find it in March to prepare for coronavirus.

In 2023, Kyono Tanabata takes place in Kamogawa Area (鴨川エリア), Kitano Kmiyagawa Area (北野紙屋川エリア), Umekoji Area (梅小路エリア), and Uji Area (宇治エリア).

If you don’t have some, ask “虫よけスプレー(Mushi Yoke spray/Bug supray) and かゆみ止め(Kayumi dome/cream or spray to stop itching) at drugstore.

Between Sanjo Ohashi and Shjo Ohashi bridge, there are food stands. And live performances are available.

Furin Toh 風鈴灯

At the river bank near Sanjo Ohashi bridge, there are many lanterns.

Negaigot Ko-na 願い事コーナー

Write your wishes on a piece of paper called Tanzaku. And Hang it on to the leave of the Bamboos.

Yuzen Nagashi 友禅流し

Hours・・・Around 18:00～18:20 and 20:00～20:20
Place・・・Between Sanjo Ohashi and Shjo Ohashi bridge

Yuzen is a traditional technique of dyeing textiles. Yuzen Nagashi is a process of it and craftsperson washes away glue and dye taking advantage of the river.

Yuzen Nagashi in Kyo no Tanabata are not real ones. These days, real Yuzen Nagashi doesn’t take place in river because it would contaminate the water.
