Komorebi(木漏れ日) means the sunbeams leaking from woods and leaves.

Take a look at the photo. The space between leaves makes lens and the sunbeams cast themselves in circle on the shadow. I’ve heard we can’t find such a word in any other languages but I’m sure you can understand our aesthetic sense.

When we go out to admire flowers, autumn leaves, gardens, and other things, we always pay attention to Komorebi without consciousness. For example, when we see autumn leaves, we also see it as a part of the scenery.

In this photo, you can enjoy Komorebi, Mizukagami, and the autumn leaves at the same time. Besides, we feel the warmth with it. We prefer a scenery like this.

On the contrary, we feel something refreshing with it.

I suppose we, including Shika-san, want to feel we also a part of nature or universe.

With trees, you can find Komoebi in any places in the planet. Just enjoy them as we do. 合掌

As indicated in the Imperial period Reiwa, we’ve loved flowers in spring and autumn leaves in fall for a long time.

Autumn leaves or autumn colors in English is called “紅葉 (pronounced as Momiji or Koyo) in Japanese. The word means “leaves turned red” these days.

However, Momiji in ancient times was described as “黄葉 (leaves turned red)” and  was pronounced as “Momichi.”

“Momishi” is a noun form of a verb “Momitsu (To turn yellow).” As plum blossom used to be considered as typical spring flower instead of Sakura, our sensitivity on seasons was different from the one we have today.

In Manyoshu, the oldest compilation of Waka poem in the 8th century, there are 92 poems about autumn leaves. And 88 out of 92 describe them as yellow leaves, i.e., yellow was a color of fall.

In those days, an poem called “秋風辞” written by Emperor Wu of Han dynasty had an effect on this idea.

The poem is found in the Wen Xuan, one of the oldest anthologies of Chinese literature, that was popular among the learned in our country. Actually, it is often said “Manyoshu was not compiled without Wen Xuan.”

The poem (excerpt) reads:

In ancient China, fall was sad season and implied something on decline. Our ancestors inherited this idea but they found something aesthetic in leaves of plants. They read many poems about them in Manyoshu though there no poem referring to autumn leaves in Wen Xuan. 　

The fierce Goryo turns the leaves red

In the 9th century, owing to Sugawara no Michizane paved the way for the word known as “紅葉”/ “Red leaves” today.  He is one of the most famous historical figures and Goryos and known as “The deity of learning” and a prominent poet of Waka and Kanshi (Chinese poem).

He wrote:

It is tough to translate this in English as to translate “Ode to a Nightingale” in Japanese and I tell you the situation.

He was on a journey and faced a mountain ornamented with autumn leaves (紅葉/ Red leaves). He decided to offer them to deity as “幣(Nusa).” Nusa is an offering to deity.

A poem of Du Mu, a Chinese poet of 9th century, had an impact on this poem. It reads:

He was a master of Kanshi and narrated the aesthetics in Japanese fall with the expression(s) of ancient China.

Autumn leaves these days

Strictly speaking, “紅葉” means the leaves turned red but it doesn’t mean a specific color usually. It stands for the leaves turned their colors in general. We admire the leaves of many kind of plants in red, yellow, green, and so on. And I guess many people prefer the red ones. The following is recommended places to visit. Enjoy them. 合掌

The best place to visit is Eikando Temple.

In Tenjuan temple, you can enjoy red and yellow leaves in Karesansui garden.

I prefer Korin-in temple. The most underrated place.

In this post, I’ll show you an itinerary to enjoy the autumn leaves in iconic places: Kiyomizudera, Kinkakuji, Eikando, Nanzenji, Tenjuan, and the night illumination of Eikando and Kiyomizudera.

This itinerary begins at Kyoto sta. bus stop. In case you don’t start at Kyoto sta., be Niohmon gate of Kiyomizudera around 06:00.

At Kyoto sta. D2 bus stop (the red circles), take no. 206 for Gion via Kiyomizu-dera temple.

No. 206 is a loop line. There are 206s depart at A3 for the opposite direction. Don’t take them. TAKE 206 AT D2 BUS STOP.

Gion bus stop @ 07:40 祇園バス停　7時40分頃

Be at Gion bus stop B around 07:40. It takes about 30 minutes from Kiyomizudera temple. Take no.12 for Kinkakuji at 07:50 (weekdays) or 07:49 (weekends and holidays).

We’ll gat to Kinkakuji michi bus stop around 08:30.

There are 3 Kinkkauji michi bus stops. No. 12 arrives at the red one. The red alien is the entrance of Kinkakuji temple.

Walk in the same direction the bus you were on goes. Turn right at the second traffic light (indicated as 金閣寺前/ Kinkakujimae) and you’ll find the entrance.

Kinkakuji opens up the gate at 09:00. In the autumn leaves seasons, we usually wait in line to enter.

I would takes hours to enter. I waited about 2 hours couples of years ago. Kinkakuji is a large place and it takes about 1 hour to get through to the exit. So, I planed to leave there around 11:00.

Kinkakuji is also a famous place to visit in Kyoto and crowded especially in the autumn leaves season. It has many faculties in a large garden.

The red octopus is the entrance and the yellow one is the exit. It takes about 1 hour to reach the exit in this season.

At the red octopus, we can see the golden pavilion. Kinkakuji is designed to enjoy on boat and there are few Momijis to be enjoyed with it.

Kozanji is also famous for a statue of Zaizen Dohji, one of the guardians of Buddhism.

About Jingoji temple 神護寺について

Jingohi is the most famous temple in Takao. It also is one of the most important Buddhist temple because it has a close relationship with Kukai and Saicho. It enshrines a statue of Yakushi Nyorai, the 2nd statue registered as National Treasure.

Jisso-in Monzeki temple 実相院門跡

About Jissoin Monzeki temple 実相院について

Jissoin is some of Monzekis. Monzeki is a temple run by an abbot of the imperial lineage. It used to be located in Kamigyo and it moved to Iwakura due to Ohnin no Ran, the largest civil war and restored by Tokugawa Iemitsu, the 3rd Shogun of the Tokugwa Shogunate. The main hall has a modern Karesansui garden and a small stroll garden. It is a very quiet place and we can hear cheerful songs in week days from a kindergarten located near the temple.

Yuka Momiji 床紅葉

On the well-polished floor in the main hall, we can enjoy “Yuka Momiji (a kind of Mizukagami of the autumn leaves).”

Kokono no Oniwa (The garden of hearts) 枯山水庭園「こころのお庭」

A unique Karesasui garden constructed by citizens. Taking advantage of Mt. Hiei as Shakkei, it has a “depth”.

We say “depth” in Japanese and I have no idea how would I say in English. I mean the garden looks so large thanks to the mountain. For Japanese people, I guess 9 out of 10, find the garden large because they see the mountain as a part of the garden without conscious and intention. That’s the effect of Shakkei.

Ohnin no Ran devastated Rengeji and it moved to Takano in the 17th century. It is one of the most underrated place in Kyoto. We can enjoy the tranquility there. The statue of Siddhartha Gautama enshrined used to belong to Enryakuji temple.

The garden

We can admire a garden stands for Mt. Horai, the mysterious mountain found in Taoism. We can take photo of it only in a room of the temple. The scene makes a typical Gakubuchi Teien. In this art, we take pillars and beams as picture frames.

Near the entrance gate, there are gingko trees. The ground is covered with the leaves of them in late November or early December. Take our breath away.

Sanzen-in used to be a small temple called Enyubo and became a Monzeki temple in the 12th century. It has a large garden and we can enjoy beautiful flowers and plants in every season.

Yuseien garden 有清園

Sanzen-in has many garden and the most beautiful one in fall is Yusei-en stroll garden in front of Shinden. The ground with mosses is extraordinary when it is covered with fall leaves.

In Gokuraku Ohjoin in the garden, we experience what Gokuraku Jodo (the paradise in Buddhism) is.

In the garden, we meet famous Warabe Jizo, the tiny and kawaii Jizo Bostsu, the Buddhist deities.

The garden is adjacent to Konjikido hall. On the way to it, we can find Kanzakuras (Sakuras bloom in fall or winter).

Jikko-in temple 実光院

About Jikko-in temple 実光院について

Jikko-in is a small temple located near Sanzen-in. In the 9th century, a Buddhist music called “Syomyo” imported from the Tang dynasty to Jikko-in. Due to this, many musical instruments exhibited. The same as Sanzen-in, we can enjoy beautiful flowers and plants in every season.

Kyu-Rikaku-in garden 旧理覚院庭園

In this garden, there are not many Kaede tress but the colors of their leaves are stunning. We can focus on them in tranquility.

Hosen-in is also a small and quiet place famous among Kyoto-enthusiasts for a large pine tree and Chi-Tenjo. Chi-Tenjo means “Blooded ceiling.” The ceiling of the temple used to be a floor of Fushimi castle. In the 17th century, many Tokugawa Samurais choose the most respectful self-inflict death with their own sword. The floor has blood stains and Hosen-in enshrined it as a ceiling to relieve their souls. 合掌

As described, Eikando provides us with one of the most beautiful colors in Kyoto. In addition to it, there are many trees and Migoro goes on for a long time.

We can enjoy the autumn leaves in red and the ones near the big Gingko tree the best place. The tree is located near the exit of the garden.

Konkaikomyoji has an iconic Sanmon gate as Nanzenji. In this fall we can visit it and have a good view of Kyoto. The leaves in front of it are in red.

This is the place. The leaves are in dull red. We can find this color in any other places. The trees around the pond makes a perfect Mizukagami despite in the daytime.

5. Nison-in temple 二尊院

About Nison-in temple 二尊院の紅葉

Nison-in was established in the 9th century and is a one of the oldest temple in Kyoto. It was named “Nison-in (Temple with 2 deities)” because it enshrines 2 deities as the main one.  The Kaede leaves grow like a tunnel in the passage to the main hall.

“Dragon garden” belongs to the main hall also is a beautiful.

In this post, I’ll show you an itinerary to enjoy the autumn leaves in Kyoto in late November or early December: Tofukuji tempole, Komyoin temple, Korinin temple, Ryoanji temple, and Toji. We can enjoy the best autumn leaves and night illumination. The 4 out of 5 destinations are Zen temples.

It takes about 10 minutes to Tofukuji usually but it would take 20 minites in autumn leaves season due because we take photos on Gaunkyo bridge (the red annotation on the map).

About Tofukuji temple 東福寺について

Tofukuij used to be have thousands of Sakura trees. And they were cut down in the 15th century because Sakura admirers visited the temple and they prevented the monks from Buddhist training in calmness every spring. Later, the temple planted Kaede trees. Today, it was known as one of the most poplar and crowded place to enjoy autumn leaves in Kyoto despite the monk’s will.

Tofukuji has 2 places to visit. The stroll garden and Honbo garden.

There is a bridge called Tsutenkyo bridge. First, we stroll around the valley and admire the iconic view from the bridge.

Honbo garden　本坊庭園

Honbo means a main facility in a temple. The one of Tofukuji is surrounded by  four gardens designed by Shigemori Mirei, the prominent garden artist in the 20th century.

In the north garden, we can enjoy extraordinary “Gradation” if we can visit there in proper time.

The south garden is a very impressive Karesaunsui. It stands for Hassou Jodou, the eight important events in the life of Siddhartha Gautama.

About Komyoin temple 光明院について

Komyoin temple is one of the most underrated place in Kyoto. It is a sub-temple of Tofukuji. As referred before, the garden was designated Shigemori Mirei. He is known as “Sessyu in Showa period.”

Sessyu is a Zen monk and artist in the 15th century. He is a master of Japanese ink painting. Mirei is a Karesansui garden designer and Karesansui is a developed Japanese garden under the influence of Chinese ink painting imported in the 14th century.

Komyoin is also known as “Niji no Kokedera (A moss temple in the rainbow)” and we can admire beautiful mosses.

Take 204, 205, and 206 and get off at Daitokuji mae bus stop.

It takes about 5 minutes from Daitkuji mae bus stop to Korin in temple.

Korinin is a sub-temople of Daitokuji temple and the best and the most underrated place to admire autumn leaves in Kyoto. It is not open to public usually but it opens up the gate for us in spring and fall.

About Nanzenji temple 南禅寺について

Nanzenji is one of the most important Zen temple along with Tenryuji, Shokokuji , Kenninji, Tofukuji, and Manjuji temple.

The iconic Sanmon gate is referred in Sanmon Gosan no Kiri, a Kabuki play written in the 18th century. The man is Ishikawa Goemon, a leader of bandits in the 16th century and the ancestor of Ishikawa Goeon XIII in Lupin III.

The garden belongs to the Hojo was designed by Konori Ensyu, one of the most famous garden designer in Japan. The theme of garden is the same as that of Ryoanji temple.

Ginkakuji means “silver temple” but it has never been plated with silver, making a good contrast to Kinakakuji temple plated with gold. Both of them were constructed under the strong influence of Saihoji temple. Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, the founder of Ginkakuji and the 8th Shogun of Ashikaga Shogunate wanted to have Ginkakuji as “his own Saihjoji.”

So-called “Autumn leaves” are Kaede leaves. In this chapter, let me show how they grow up.

In mid-April, Kaede flowers bloom.

Flowers fall off and the leaves grow up to Aomomiji in late-April or early March.

And leaves have seeds.

Around June, the leaves fall off and they are in Migoro.

Around late September, the green leaves start turning their colors.

Around mid-November, they are in Migoro.

Fall: Illumination with autumn leaves

Overview

Quite opposite to spring time, we have scarce breeze in fall. So, we can enjoy Mizukagami with ease. Toji has one of the most beautiful Mizukagami in night time. If you wanted to enjoy night-time Mizukagami, Toji is the best place.

Usually, we can enter Kodo at nigt in the illumination event in fall.

The most famous architecture in Toji temple. It is the highest wooden tower in Japan.

Huge fires burnt out pagodas of Toji temple many times. The one we can see today was built as a donation made by Tokugawa Yoshimitsu, the third Shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate.

At the center of the pagoda, there is a pillar named Shin Bashira(心柱). Take a look at the picture above. There is a stick on the top roof. It is a tip of the pillar that goes through the bottom of the pagoda. At the top of it, there is an ornamnent called Hoju. Hoji is an object that tells the architecture is a grave of the Buddha. (Pagoda is a place in which the aches of the Buddha is graved.)

The Shin Bashira of the pagoda is consedered as Dainichi Nyorai(大日如来), the supreme Deity in the Vajrayana Buddhism (the Buddhist teaching in secret).

In the period in which illumination event is held, we can see the inside of the pagoda in daytime. Inside of it, there are 12 statues of the Buddhist Deities.

What is Toji temple?

Toji is one of two Buddhist temples officialy admitted in Heian kyo city built in 794.

In 823, emperor Saga gave the temple to Kukai and it became the first temple of the Vajrayana Buddhism in Japan.

In Kodo, there are statues of Buddhist Deities. They make so-called 3D mandala.

Mandala is a picture which tells us the teaching of the Vajrayana Buddhism. In 3D mandala, 22 statues make mandala. Kukai made it for the purpose of letting people understand the Vajrayana Buddhism.

In 1994, Toji is listed as one of the UNESCO world heritage site.
