Illumination
At twilight, the zen garden and the back yard is illuminated with dim light. The host knows the personality of the garden and maples there. This is the best illuminated Zen garden on the planet.
Things to tell the season
The first picture is a wash basin we use when we enter a tea room. There are camelia flowers and maple leaves. The second one is Sagagiku, the chrysanthemum indegenous to Saga in Arashiyama. The host tells us that we are in the midst of fall with them. This is the most important thing because we adore maple in autumn to find that we are in tender caress of fall.

Zen garden 本堂前庭 (枯山水庭園)
In Zen garden, If we visited there many times in autumn, green leaves gradually change into half vivid, half pale vermilion.
In the end, the leaves fell onto the white pebbles. This is a way to enjoy autumn leaves in Zen garden: to see the verimilion against the white and green.
Stroll garden 書院南庭園(池泉式回遊庭園)
Stroll garden has a pond and visitors enjoy it strolling around it. Here in Tenju-an, we can expeirence a typical fashion to admire it in fall: to see fallen leaves on pond. Tenju-an keeps many carps in the pond. They swim around among the fallen leaves and gives us “Hakanai (it means nothing reminds the same)” impression.
Around the pond, we can see pale-colored leaves and its reflection on the surface of the pond. This is a technique to enjoy something around a pond called “Mizukagami.”
