At 13:00, I suppose we wait in line for tickets.
The white one is a ticket booth. I guess it would take about 1 hour to enter the temple.
Eikando also has many facilities in a large garden and is the most famous place for admire autumn leaves. It takes about 2 hours to enjoy them.
The garden is willed with the awesome autumn leaves.
The autumn leaves in green, yellow, vermilion, and red welcome you. The most beautiful place is a tall gingko tree located in the yellow octopus in the previous map.
In the video, the gingko leaves has just fallen off the ground. They still contain water and are in brilliant yellow. And Kaede leaves are also in brilliant red and vermilion. I guess this condition could last only about 24 hours or so.
At a tea house, we can enjoy traditional sweets under the autumn leaves.
Around 15:30, we leave Eikando for Nanzenji.

Tenjuan is one of the most underrated places in Kyoto. It has a calm Karesansui garden and a stroll garden. Stroll garden has a pond and we can meet beautiful Nishikigoi carp there. One of my favorite places.
We leave Tenjuan for Nanzenji, located next door.

About Nanzenji temple 南禅寺について

Nanzenji is one of the most important Zen temple along with Tenryuji, Shokokuji , Kenninji, Tofukuji, and Manjuji temple.
The iconic Sanmon gate is referred in Sanmon Gosan no Kiri, a Kabuki play written in the 18th century. The man is Ishikawa Goemon, a leader of bandits in the 16th century and the ancestor of Ishikawa Goeon XIII in Lupin III.
The garden belongs to the Hojo was designed by Konori Ensyu, one of the most famous garden designer in Japan. The theme of garden is the same as that of Ryoanji temple.
To our regret, we only admire the leaves near Sanomn gate in this itinerary in order to visit Tenjuan. In terms of autumn leaves, Tenjuan is better place to see.

Around 17:00, we go back to Eikando Temple.
The night illumination of Eikando 永観堂ライトアップ 17時以降
The illumination in Eikando is so popular that it is always crowded. The illumination usually starts at 17:30 and visitors always wait in line. If you wanted to enter Eikando at 17:30, it would be better to be there around 16:30~17:00. At night, the path in Eikando is one-way. It takes at least 1 hour to stroll around the garden. It is not good idea to go other illumination event on the same day. If you could leave Eikando by 19:30, you would visit Kiyomizudera again.
Head for Subway Keage sta.
- Take a Subway Tozai line for Kyoto Shiyakusho-mae, Karasuma Oike, and Uzumasa Tenjingawa at track no.1.
- Get off at Sanjo Keihan sta. and go to Keihan Sanjo sta. (adjacent to Sanjo Keihan sta.)
- Take a Keihan line for Yodayabashi, Nakanoshima (Track no, 3/4).
- Get off at Keihan Gion shijo sta.
The green one is Gion Shijo sta.
Kiyomizudera night illumination 清水寺ライトアップ
The entrance closes at 21:00. If you could leave Eikando by 19:30, you would arrive at the entrance around 20:30.
