In accordance with Sankan Shion (三寒四温 A week has three cold days and four warm days), we expect the upcoming spring in the air with a conviction that our lives come alive anew. In April, when a new fiscal year and semester commence, Somei Yoshinos, so called Sakura, are in full bloom. Hence, they conjures up precious memories.

Moreover, they remind the literate of the sentences of a poem composed by 劉 希夷 (Liu Ky? I’m not sure how the name pronounced in Chinese. In Japanese, it pronounced as “Ryu Ki i.”) in Tang dynasty.

They reads: 年年歳歳花相似 歳歳年年人不同

They could be roughly translated as “Every year flowers bloom same but people are not the same.” They are also known as “Zen Words” that implies everything is changeable.

They are simple but very profound, especially the latter one. The former means that flowers bloom in the same way every year. It tells us a fact.

The latter says, “Every year, 人(Person or people. We can’t tell 人 means single or plural in this case. ) are not the same as the flowers. It is very ambiguous and prolific because we can’t be sure we are not the same or those who around us are no the same, or other. The understanding depends on the lives we lead.

Every spring, I always remember these sentences being at a loss for the answer under the full-bloomed Somei Yoshinos.

I assume Sakuras are popular for something aesthetic but we don’t admire them only for instagrammable stimulations.

Fortunately, Somei Yoshinos has just stared blooming this year. Let us contemplate what they mean.  I suppose it is “the authentic way” to enjoy Sakuras. 合掌

Not in Japan? Don’t worry. Visit Kiyomizudera virtually and enjoy the Sakura.

As indicated in the Imperial period Reiwa, we’ve loved flowers in spring and autumn leaves in fall for a long time.

Autumn leaves or autumn colors in English is called “紅葉 (pronounced as Momiji or Koyo) in Japanese. The word means “leaves turned red” these days.

However, Momiji in ancient times was described as “黄葉 (leaves turned red)” and  was pronounced as “Momichi.”

“Momishi” is a noun form of a verb “Momitsu (To turn yellow).” As plum blossom used to be considered as typical spring flower instead of Sakura, our sensitivity on seasons was different from the one we have today.

In Manyoshu, the oldest compilation of Waka poem in the 8th century, there are 92 poems about autumn leaves. And 88 out of 92 describe them as yellow leaves, i.e., yellow was a color of fall.

In those days, an poem called “秋風辞” written by Emperor Wu of Han dynasty had an effect on this idea.

The poem is found in the Wen Xuan, one of the oldest anthologies of Chinese literature, that was popular among the learned in our country. Actually, it is often said “Manyoshu was not compiled without Wen Xuan.”

The poem (excerpt) reads:

In ancient China, fall was sad season and implied something on decline. Our ancestors inherited this idea but they found something aesthetic in leaves of plants. They read many poems about them in Manyoshu though there no poem referring to autumn leaves in Wen Xuan. 　

The fierce Goryo turns the leaves red

In the 9th century, owing to Sugawara no Michizane paved the way for the word known as “紅葉”/ “Red leaves” today.  He is one of the most famous historical figures and Goryos and known as “The deity of learning” and a prominent poet of Waka and Kanshi (Chinese poem).

He wrote:

It is tough to translate this in English as to translate “Ode to a Nightingale” in Japanese and I tell you the situation.

He was on a journey and faced a mountain ornamented with autumn leaves (紅葉/ Red leaves). He decided to offer them to deity as “幣(Nusa).” Nusa is an offering to deity.

A poem of Du Mu, a Chinese poet of 9th century, had an impact on this poem. It reads:

He was a master of Kanshi and narrated the aesthetics in Japanese fall with the expression(s) of ancient China.

Autumn leaves these days

Strictly speaking, “紅葉” means the leaves turned red but it doesn’t mean a specific color usually. It stands for the leaves turned their colors in general. We admire the leaves of many kind of plants in red, yellow, green, and so on. And I guess many people prefer the red ones. The following is recommended places to visit. Enjoy them. 合掌

The best place to visit is Eikando Temple.

In Tenjuan temple, you can enjoy red and yellow leaves in Karesansui garden.

I prefer Korin-in temple. The most underrated place.

Around mid-October, Fujibakamas feed Asagimadara butterflies for their migration in near future and reminds the wingless to Ohsima Zakura of the previous spring.

Fujibakama is a flower as one of the seven flowers of fall. Since a poem about it was compiled in Manyo shu, the oldest collection of Waka, it was one of the most favored themes of them.

The ones indigenous to Kyoto was on the verge of extinct but thanks to the conservation of Genji Fujibakama-kai, we can enjoy them in Fujibakama Matsuri.

Dried leaves of Fujibakama give out the fragrance like Oshima Zakura and court ladies in Heian period (794-1185) put them into Nioi Bukuro (Fragrance bag) to enjoy the delicate scent.

There are many kind of Sakuras in Japan and most famous, so-called Sakura, is Somei Yoshino. Today, we can admire them in spring through the archipelago but their ancestors were born in the 19th century on a crossbreed tree. Their mother is Edohigan and father is Ohshima Zakura.

Ohshima Zakuras are found in many places in Kyoto and the most recommended place is Haradanien. The garden is known as “Sakura Paradise” and one of the most late-flowering place in Kyoto among the Kyoto enthusiasts.

Generally speaking, Omuro Zakuras in Ninnaji temple is famous for the latest bloom Sakura in Kyoto but the ones in Haradanien is the latest ones because it is located in the mountains and spring arrives slightly later than Ninnnaji.

However, the latest one was Kitano Zakura. Kitano Zakura was only found in Kitano Tenmangu shrine, famous for the faith of Goyro, and there were no genetically same Sakuras on the planet. The last time we saw them is 2023. In January 2024, the tree vanished all of a sudden.

The shrine announced nothing about them. I tried to ask the reason but gave up the idea. They existed and gone. That’s all. We live in the moment. 合掌

Kawazu Zakura is the earliest bloom Sakura in Kyoto.

Somei Yoshino　染井吉野

Somei Yoshino is so-called Sakura. When we say Sakura, we means Somei Yoshino, .

Shidare Zakura　枝垂桜

Shidare Zakura is also known as “Weeping Sakura/ Cherry blossom.” We called it “Shidare” especially in casual way, There are many kinds of Shidare and they start blooming from mid-March to mid-April. We can enjoy them all through Sakura season.

Yama Zakura　山桜

Yama Zakura is Sakura with red leaves. You’ll find it with Mt. Fuji on the tail of 1,000 yen bill.

Kitano Zakura was true “The latest bloom Sakura in Kyoto” but we cannot enjoy them any longer. The last time we saw her is 2023.

Why do we love Sakura?

As described in this post, we detest anything anemic, especially a state of mind. We always an opportunity to come alive anew. For this aim, we carry out many things. For example, one of the reason we put Matsuri in practice. In this kind of Matsuri, we welcome reborn Kami to revitalize our life.

In winter, our body and soul is weak. And when spring comes, we convict that our lives came back to us again and they start again. This conviction is hidden our idea and attitude for spring. Sakura blooms in the end of winter and the begging of spring. I, as a Japanese goat, suppose the season Sakura blooms goes with and affect what we feel about our idea for spring. Actually, the fiscal year of Japan starts on April 1st. Schools and companies start their new year on the day. We have many beautiful spring memories with parents, relatives, friends, and collogues. Some have gone, some remain. Every year, Sakura reminds us of these memories.

Sakura lasts only for a week. We find Sakura is Hakanai (fragile) and it conjures up Shogyo Mujo. Shogyo Mujo is an idea of Buddhism. In a nut shell, it means everything changes without stopping and nothing is invariable and leads to Zen. When Sakura falls off, we remember, without consciousness, everything is variable and understand all we can do is to live the moment.

That’s the reason we love Sakure, I’m sure.

Maruyama park is a popular public park in Kyoto. It is located near Yasaka shrine or Kodaiji temple. It has many cherry blossom tress. The most famous one is a huge weeping cherry blossom tree. Besides, there are many Somei Yoshino trees in the park.

The park is located adjacent to Yasaka shrine, one of the oldest Shinto shrine/ Buddhist temple, and near Kiyomizudera temple, Kodaji temple, and other places.

At night in early April, Shidare Sakura concerts (or recitals) takes place for 3 nights. Shinen garden is illuminated and concert or recital is held around a pond. Each day has 2 concerts/recitals. Once you enter the garden, you can enjoy both of them.

The Shinen garden consists of four gardens and the total area is about 4000 square yard. Most of the cherry blossom trees there are weeping cherry blossom trees. They bloom in the most exquisite way. Night illumination in Heian Jingu shrine is one of the most recommended site to visit.

Near Gojiu no To pagoda 五重塔西側

Toji is famous for Fuji Zakura and Sakura illumination but even so-called Kyoto enthusiasts don’t know its Kawazu Zakura. We have 2 places to admire it.

The first one is located near Gojiuno To pagoda. There are Kawazu Zakura trees to the west of it. We can be there with admission fee. Toji is one of popular destinations for tourists especially in Sakura season begins late March. Kazu Zakura blooms in mid-March and quite a few people know they can enjoy it in Toji temple. So, we can adore it in silence.

一番めは五重塔の西側です。ここは、立体曼荼羅が配される講堂や五重塔がある有料エリの中にあります。ご覧のように五重塔を背景に存分に楽しむことができます。

I think it would be better to visit Toji in rainy day. In the gentle drizzle, the warm breeze let the petals go. This is a typical tranquil moment in early spring in Kyoto. Kyoto suffers from overtourism  these years but Toji in Kawzu Zakura season narrowly escape it. In near future, this calmness might be ruined.

And think about Sakura blooms a couples of later. This is the way I every year. Imagine something doesn’t exist with the help of what exists.

Kawazu Zakura in Toji temple usually starts to bloom in mid-February and goes into full bloom in mid-March.

Overview

What is Kitanozakura?

Kitanozakura is located at the flower in the map.

Kitanozakura is known as the last-blooming Sakura in Kyoto. It is Sakura indigenous to Kitano Tenmangu shrine. No one can find it in any other places on the planet. The flowers bloom on a 120 years old tree in and was known as late-bloomer.

The tree survived for about 12 decades and had a hole like this (Now the hole was plastered).  Kitano Tenmangu shrine suspected that it was dying. The shrine asked Sumitomo Forestry Co., Ltd., the famous logging and construction company, to make an inspection on the tree. The company found it did not match any Sakura on the database it had. In addition to it, it also noticed that it did not resemble any other Sakura in appearance. In the end, Kitanozakura was “discovered” as a new Sakura species.

The flower

The peculiar thing about Kitanozakura is the color of the flower. At first, white flower blooms. In a couple of days, it turns into a pink one. Most of Sakura in spring don’t change its color. This means that we can’t see the same Kitanozakura in another times.

We have Someiyoshino in every spring. If we were in the same place we visit in the previous year, we would see Someiyoshino in the same way.

On the other hand, in Kitanotenmangu shrine, we couldn’t see Kitanozakura in the same way at all even in the next day.

This flower tells Kyoto that spring is nearly ending. We notice that winter is ending with Kawazu Zakura, find ourselves in the midst of spring with Someiyoshino, and all of a sudden, realize that spring on the verge of ending.

I found small buds today. I suppose Kitano Zakura will start to bloom around April 10 and be in full bloom around 17.

Not yet bloomed. I’ll show you the records of the last 2 years. Usually, Kitanozakura start to bloom in around 2nd week of April and is in full bloom around 20th.

I visited Kitano Tenmangu shrine only to find small buds thought I found a couple of flowers bloomed in the same season in the last year.

This year, the flowers will bloom in the next week end. The best time will be around 20th of this month, I suppose.

On the other hand, we are in the best season of Someiyoshino now.

Today, I found a couple of flowers as I expected in the last week. Kitanozakura has just started to bloom though Someiyoshino in other places started to go away.

Now Omuro Zakura in Ninnnaji is in 80％ bloom. It would be better to visit Ninnnaji, Haradanien garden, and Kitanotenmangu shrine in the next week end.

Now Kitanozakura is in full bloom. Some flowers turned into pink.

It was tough to predict the bloom of Sakura of this year. Today, I found Ariake (sakura) at Kitano Tenmangu shrine. I admired Ariake and Kitanozakura in the same day though I can’t usually.

Every year, I visit Kitano Tenmangu shrine from January to April to see lots of flowers and to foresee when Sakura blooms. I always remember the last 4 months with the ox (I called it “Ussie-kun.”), enjoying Kitanozakura.

I’m not sure when they were in full bloom last year. I visited Ninnjaji on 4/17 to find most of them gone.

April 11

Omuro Zakura start to fall off. Ariake near Chokushimon is in the same state. There are many visitors and I didn’t enter the area where Omuro Zakura are. In the area, we wall narrow paths and I thought I could’t keep social distance. At Kitano Tenmangu shrine, I saw Kitanozakura, the last blooming Sakura in Kyoto, started to bloom.

April 5

The board says Omuro zakura start to bloom. Ariake near Chokushimon is about 50％ bloom. Omuro zakura are also in the same bloom.

March 29, 2020

Ninnaji temple tells us the blooming of Maple leaves, Omurozakura and Tsutsuji with the board. We can find this board at Sanmon gate (the gate faces the road.) The center is Omurozakura (御室桜) . This board says small buds of Omurozakura is found.

Through the Sanmon gate, we can locate Chokushimon to the left. Near the gate, there is a tree of Ariake (Sakura). Omurozakura is kind of Ariake and both of them bloom in the same way. So, we can take advantage of the Ariake as an indicator.

In March

This year, Kawazu Zakura and other spring flowers bloom 2 weeks earlier than usual year. On March 8, I found Yamazakura and Shidare Zakura in Kyoto Imperial Palace bloomed. Omuro Zakura will be in full bloom in early April in 2020 though it does in mid April usually.

What is Omuro Zakura?

This is tOmuro Zakura. It is a kind of Sakura called Ariake.

This is Ariake. It is a mother of Omuro Zakura.

Trees of Omuro Zakura are short and look like shrubs.

On the other hand, trees of Someiyoshino, so-called Sakura is taller than Omuro Zakura trees. Most of Sakura trees are as tall as that of Someiyoshino.

It is not obvious why the trees are shorter than other Sakura. Some hypothesis says that the trees are not able to have long roots due to the clay-like ground, and other one claims that the ground is not fertile. I suppose the latter has a point. We also find Omuro Zakura in Haradanien garden which used to be a dump site. (Now the Sakura paradise, though.)

Omuro Zakura has enjoyed its reputation for centuries.  Keijo Shoran, the famous Kyoto guide book in the 18th century reveals that Ninaji has lots of Yaezakura and they are the best Sakura in Kyoto.

Yaezakura is a kind of Sakura which has double flowered/petaled flower. Omuro Zakura belongs to Yaezakura. These days, we have sigle flowered/petaled Omuro Zakura.

It has two colors of flowers; White and pink.

The sprig of 2019 expected New Imperial era Reiwa and Ninnaji had a special stage to admire Omuro Zakura. The is a poem written on the wall. The era was named after it. Check the link below.

Where can we enjoy Omuro Zakura?

At the red alien in the map, there are ticket booths. The entrance fee is 500 jpy for adult.

Near the ticket booths, there is a sign board to tell us how Omuro Zakura blooms. 見頃 means the best time to see it.

Every year, Kawazu Zakura, the earliest blooming Sakura in Kyoto, tells us that tough winter is on the verge of ending. We have some Kawazu Zakura place here but my favorite is Toji temple. Toji a.k.a. Kyoh Gokokuji temple is a few remnant of ancient Hiean Kyo city and is still located in the same place as some 1200 years ago.

Near Miei do hall, we can spot the words of Kukai, the founder of Shingon Buddhism on a sign board. A monk of Toji choose Kukai’s words suitable for a season and write it down on a sheet of paper and stick it on the board every month.

Sakura and an ancient poem

This year, Kawazu Zakura started to bloom earlier than expected but the words were exquisitely chosen:

色は匂へど　散りぬるを

我が世誰ぞ　常ならむ

有為の奥山　今日越えて

浅き夢見じ　酔ひもせず

This is a famous poem used to learn to write Hiragana letters.

For those who learn Japanese language, I’ll show you the poem in Hiragana and its translation:

いろはにほへと　ちりぬるを   Blooming flower is to be fade away.

わがよたれそ　つねならむ       We are to go away.

うゐのおくやま　けふこえて   Do not be indulged in fleeting dream.

あさきゆめみし　ゑひもせず   You shall be enlightened.

The last two sentences are translate roughly. It is not easy to translate these sentences are very prolific ones.

The important part of the poem are the first two sentences:

“Blooming flower is to be fade away. We are to go away.”

They stand for “Mujokan”, one of the most important idea which is indigenous to our cultural inheritance and us.

Mujokan is a state of mind to understand everything is subject to be changed; Everything dies and is born in every single moment.

Our ways of thinking and behavior depend on the idea because it is an inextricable part of us.

The life expectancy of full blooming Sakura is a few days. Once it bloomed, its petals start to come off and all of them are on the ground in a couple of days later.

We understand the way Sakura blooms and we are in Mujokan when see it.

That’s the reason why Japanese people love and Skura is special for us though we have lots of beautiful flowers in spring.

Of course we are content in the midst of gentle caress of spring wind but we also are amongst of Mujokan being conscious of it or not.

Every spring, Sakura reminds us of the deceased persons who were and still are very close to us.

I hope you enjoy Sakura as we do.

Overview

In spring, we have many kind of Sakura here in Kyoto; Kawazu Zakura, Shidare Zakura, Someiyoshino, Omuro Zakura, and Kitano Zakura. Someiyoshino is so-called Sakura. In this article, we foresee the best period to adore them.

In Kyoto, we can enjoy from mid-March to late-April, i.e., from Kawazu Zakura to Kitano Zakura.

Most of kinds of Sakura stay full-bloom for a couples of days. This is “Migoro,” the best period to see them.

This year, Kawazu Zakura went into full-bloom about 2 weeks earlier than usual.

Migoro

Migoro means “the best time to see something.” Kyoto gives us 4 Migoro of Sakura;

• Mid-March
• Late March to mid-April
• Mid-April
• Around April 20th

Blooming of Sakura depend on weather, warmth and so on. So we can not foresee Migoro precisely and exactly.

In the former residence of the Konoes, we can still enjoy Shidare Zakuras.

And, in Kyoto Imperial Palace, Gyoiko Sakuras start blooming.

4月11日

In Haradanien, Shidare Zakuras and Omuro Zakuas are in full bloom.

And in Ninnnaji, Omuro Zakuras are also in Migoro.

4月5日

In Haradanien, Somei Yoshinos are in Migoro though most of them in other places start falling. If you’d like enjoy them, head for Haradanien as soon as possible.

And Shinsenen temple, they are still in Migoro.

This year, Daigogji night illumination takes place. Somei Yoshinos start falling but they still are in Migoro. Be there as soon as possible.

Along Biwako Sosui canal, Somei Yoshinos and Nanohanas are illuminated.

Gion Shirakawa night illumination started. Somei Yoshinos are almost in full bloom.

3月29日

In Keage Incline and Philosopher’s path, Somei Yoshinos are in about 80％ bloom.

In Kodaiji, the Shidare Zakura is in full bloom.

Nene’s path, Somei Yoshinos are in about 90％ bloom.

In Hirano shrine, Somei Yoshinos and Shidare Zakuras are in full bloom.

Generally speaking, Somei Yoshinos are in 90％, Shidare Zakurasa are in full bloom.

Miyuki Zakuras of Rokkakudo temple are in Migoro. Somei Yoshinos, excepting the ones in Toji, are in about 80％ bloom.

In the former residence of the Konoes, early blooming Shidares and Yamazakuas are in Migoro. There are many Shidare Zakuras and they start blooming gradually. The migoro lasts a couple of weeks.

This morning, I found Somei Yoshinos (so-called Sakura) blooming near Rissei garden Hulic (Hotel).

In Shorenin, anonymous Sakuras bloom.

In Maruyama park, Gion Benishidares and other Shidare Zakuas bloom.

We can find some buds of Kawazu Zakura in Toji, near Ichijo Modoribashi bridge, and other places as usual. I guess Somei Yoshino, so-called Sakura, would bloom in late March.

現在、原谷苑、平野神社などで、遅咲きの御衣黄、黄桜、関山、普賢象が見頃です。原谷苑では御室桜がまだ残っていますが、桜の季節も終わりが近づいています。

Omuro Zakuras in Ninnaji temple are in Migoro though some start falling. I guess they won’t last by this weekend. In this weekend, we could enjoy Omuro Zakuras in Haradanien.

The Shidare Zakuras behing the wall of the rock garden are in Migoro. Somei Yoshinos in the stroll garden are all gone but the Sakuras in Sakura garden are in Migoro.

原谷苑が見頃です。ソメイヨシノ、山桜、大島桜がまだ残っています。黄桜、御衣黄など遅咲きのものはまだ開花していません。枝垂桜はほぼ満開です。原谷苑の御室桜は咲き始めです。千本釈迦堂では御衣黄、普賢象が開花しています。近衛邸跡では遅咲きの枝垂れ桜が満開です。

Haradanien is in Migoro. The Somei Yoshinos, the Yamazakuras, and the Ohsima Zakuars are still alive. The Shidare Zakuras are almost in full bloom. In Senbon Shakado, the Gyoikos, and the Fugenzos bloom. In Knoetei Ato, there still are some Shidare Zakuras in full bloom.

The most of all Somei Yoshinos start falling. About 70％ left. The early bloomers are all gone. I’m afraid we can’t enjoy them in this weekend.

This week end, I guess we can enjoy the Sakuras, including Somei Yoshinos,  in Haradanien, the Omuro Zakuras in Ninnaji temple. We could enjoy Somei Yashinos in Takao and Ohara.

In the Karesansui garden of Komyoin temple, the Somei Yoshinos are in full bloom. In Eikando, Yamazakuras still bloom.

In Philosopher’s path, Nanzenji, and other places, Somei Yoshinos are in Migoro. Ohoshima Zakuras start blooming. The Shidare Zakura in Kodaiji are on decline. Hurry.

Yamazakuras, early-bloomed Shidare Somei Yoshinos and Yamazakuras are also on decline.

In Keage Incline, the Somei Yoshihos are in full bloom.

And Chionin, too.

In Konoetei Ato, the late bloomes Shitdares are in full bloom.

In Hirano shrine, the Somei Yoshinos are in full bloom.

The Mikuruma Gaeshis bloom there. The ones of Jisyu shrine (located in Kiyomizudera) is famous but we can’t visit there due to renovation.

In Haradanien, the Shidare Zakuras are in bloom. I guess they would be in Migoro in next weekend.

In Toji, Fuji Zakura (the one in the thumbnail) has some Hazakuras but still in Migoro. The Somei Yoshinos are in full bloom. 3D mandala is available.

The Shidare Zakura of Kodaiji, some Shidare Zakuras, Yamazakuras, and early-bloomed Somei Yoshinos are on decline.

Around Gion Shirakawa, Shidare Zakuas are in full bloom but Somei Yoshinos are in about 30％ bloom. In front of the main gate of Yasaka shrine, Yamazakuras are also in about 30％ bloom. In Yasaka shrine and Maruyama park, food stands are available.

Kawazu Zakuras are still in Migoro though some are Hazakura. (Sakura with leaves. When Sakura petals fall off, we find some leaves on the bough.)

In Maruama park, near the Torii gate of Yasaka shrine, there is a tree of Shidare Zakura. The ones on the tree are in full bloom. They usually bloom 1 week earlier than Somei Yoshinos. I guess many Somei Yoshinos must be in Migoro next weekend.

At Chotokuji temple (located near Demachiyanagi sta.) , Okame Zakuras are in full bloom.  We can find a few Asebis and Yukiyanagis these days.

At Toji temple, Umes and Kawazu Zakuras are in Migoro. Near Ekojyo, the pagoda, 3D Mandala, and Higashidaimon.

On the other hand, Somei Yoshinos don’t bloom.

The former Knoe’s resdence in Kyoto Imperial Palace, Shidare Zakuras and Yama Zakuas blooom.

Near Sanjo Ohashi bridge, Kawazu Zakuras are in full bloom. About 2 weeks later than usual.

We can see the buds of Somei Yoshino growing near Pontocho Kaburenjo.

Kawazu Zakuras of Toji temple are in full bloom on 3/16 though the ones near Sanjo Ohashi and Ichijo Modoribashi bridge are in about 50％ bloom.

In Kyoto, we can find tiny buds of Somei Yoshinos and Shidara Zakuras. I guess they would bloom in late March.

This week end, we can enjoy Kawazu Zakuras at Toji, Fusan Zakuras in Kyoto Imperial place and other places. Okame Zakuras of Chotokuji, Oike Zakuras at Yanaginobanba Oike are also available.

The night illumination of Toji is the best. We can enjoy Kawazu Zakuas illuminated because they bloomed late this year.

I’m afraid we can’t see the Somei Yoshios (so-called Sakura) of Kiyomizu dera illuminated. The night illumination ends on 4/3.

On the other hand, We could enjoy Kawazu Zakura in the night illumination of Toji.

In Tenryuji, Shidare Zakura start blooming.

This is Shidarezakura near the north-east Torii of Yasaka shrine. It precedes other Someiyoshino for a week. I guess most of Someiyoshino in Kyoto will start blooming in next weekend.

At Doshisha universtity, near Imadegawa Gomon of Kyoto Imprial Palace, too.

Near Sanjo Ohashi bridge, the second tree is in full bloom. The other is in 90％ bloom.

I guess when the Sakura night illumination of Toji starts, we cannot find fully blooming Kawzu Zakura there. If you want to see fully blooming ones, go to Sanjo Ohashi asap.

In 2024, Kawazu Zakura started blooming on 2/16.

And they are in about 90％ bloom. I guess they will be in full bloom in this week end. The Sakura night illumination of Toji starts on 3/16. I’m not sure we can find them in full bloom.

On 3/3, at Konoe Tei Ato (The former residence of the Konoe’s), the buds of Shidare were still stiff and those of Yamazakura are soft. I cannot foresee when Somei Yoshino start to bloom but I guess they will start blooming in mid-March and be in full bloom about one week later.

This year, we cannot admire Kitano Zakura. And the last Sakura in this spring is Omuro Zakura in Ninnjaji temple or Haradanien garden.

April 5

In Chionin temple (photo), Nanzenji temple, Philosopher’s path and other places, most of Someiyoshino are start to fall.

In Ktano Tenmangu shrine, the buds of Kitanozakura nearly start to bloom. I suppose we can see the flowers in the next weekend.

April 4

In Kiyomizudera temple, Someiyoshino near the main hall is in full bloom.

On the other hand, some of Shidarezakura near Saimon gate are start to bloom.

Jisyuzakura in Jisyu Jinja shirne are nearly in full bloom.

April 2

We can admire the main hall with Sakura for the first time in 3 years.

At Kodaiji temple, the Zen garden is illuminated. The ditches are painted as you see in the photo.

March 29

In Kyoto Imperial Palace, some Yamazakura start to fall. Shidarezakura is are in full bloom.

At Kitano Tenmangu shrine, small buds are found. I suppose they will start to bloom around April 10.

Ninnnaji says, “Small buds of Omurozakura are found.” The Sakura in the photo is Ariake. Omurozakura is a kind of Ariake and they bloom in the same way.

In Sagasyakado (Seiryoji temple), Shidarezakura are in full bloom.

Sakura in Mt. Arashiyama is in 80％ bloom. In Hogoin temple, Shidarezakura are in full bloom.

Most of Someiyoshino in Kyoto will bloom around April 1.

In Kiyomizudera temple, Someiyoshino are in 50％ bloom.

One of four Shidarezakura is in full bloom.

In Marayama park, Gion Beni Shidare is in full bloom. Someiyoshino are in 80％ bloom.

Someiyosino in Nanzenji temple are in 50％ bloom.

At Heian Jingu shrine, Sakon no Sakura (Yamzakura) is nearly in full bloom. This Sakura has short life expectancy. It last a couple of days.

In Kiyamachi dori (near Sanjo Ohashi bridge), some of Sakura is in full bloom. I think most of Sakura in the city is in full-bloom in this weekend.

Today, I found the earliest Someiyoshino (So-called Sakura) at Ninnnaji temple.

Some Shidarezakura is still in full bloom at Kyoto Imperial palace.

At Kodaiji temple, Shidarezakura started to bloom.

At the entrance, Nene chan tells us how the Shidarezakura blooms.

In Maruyama park, the Shidarezakura I referred to last week is in full bloom now.

As I expected, Gion Beni Shidare start to bloom.

Now most of Sakura don’t bloom earlier than usual.

Some Shidare Zakura is in full bloom at Konoetei Ato in Kyoto Imperial Palace.

We can enjoy Ume and Sakura in front of Minami Romon gate of Yasaka Shrine.

Shidare Zakura in Maruyama Park blooms.

About 1 week later, Gion Beni Shidare will be start to bloom.

At Ryozen Kannon, we are able to enjoy Sakura (Daikan Zakura, I suppose) and Ume at the same time.

Most of Sakura bloom about 10 days earlier.

Night illumination of Toji started today. We can enjoy Kawazu Zakura there. The Migoro is nearly ending. Go there as soon as possible.

At Konoetei-ato in Kyoto Imperial Place, We cans see some flowers of Yamazakura and Shidare Zakura bloom. About 10 days earlier than usual year. Kawazu Zakura is still in full-bloom but petals of some flowers start to fall.

February 27

Kawazu Zakura in many places bloom 2 weeks earlier than expected. This is the case with Ume, Japanese plum blossom, and I suppose this is a trend of 2020.

On Jan. 2, we can’t find Unryubai in Kitano Tenmangu shrine but most of Ume bloom 2 weeks earlier than usual year. We can’t see whether other Sakura also bloom earlier in the same way or not.

Thought we can’t foresee the future, we can expect other Sakura bloom 10 to 14 days eaelier. Usually, most of popular Sakura places in Migoro in early-April. In this year, If we visited Kyoto in the usual Migoro, we might be in the state of mid-April in usual year. This means we would enjoy Sakura in Haradanien, Ninnnaji temple(Omuro Zakura), and Kitano Tenmangu shrine(Kitano Zakura), and Rakusai region. On the other hand, we also would enjoy Green Maple.

The forecast of 2020

Attention: The following is a tendency of Sakura blooming of usual year. No one can forecast the exact date or period to enjoy them. There are many kinds of Sakura. In March, Shidare Zakura, Yamazakura bloom. Someiyoshino, so-called Sakura blooms in April. After Somei Yoshino, Omuro Zakura and Kitano Zakura bloom.

Shisare Zakura in Konoetei-ato: Around April 20

Konoetei-ato is located in the north-west part of Kyoto Imperial Place. This is the earliest-blooming Sakura except Kawazu Zakura. We can also enjoy flowers of peach.

Shidare Zakura in Kodaiji temple: Around March 25

Kodaiji temple has an extraordinary Shidare Zakura in its Zengarden. It is huge but has exquisite flowers. As in the second photo, we can admire it through Kato Mado window.

Ryozen Kannon: Around March 25

In the garden of Kodaij temple, we catch a glimpse of a huge Bodhisattva. It is Ryozan Kannon. We can enjoy Yae Zakura and other spring flowers like Ume blossoms.

Kamigamo Shrine: Around March 25

Some Sakura, like Shidare Zakura and Kanhi Zakura go into Migoro. Famous ones like Saioh Zakura, named after Saioh in Aoi matsuri festival, and Gosho Zakura bloom early-April.

Hirano Shirne: Around March 25

Hirano shrine is one of the most famous Sakura place in Kyoto. We can admire lots of kinds of Sakura for a month from the day indicated above.

Kyoto Imperial Palace and Heianjigu: Around March 25

Sakon no Sakura of Shisinden of Kyoto Imperial palace(the 1st picutre) and Heian Jingu (the 2nd picture) bloom at the same time because Sakon no Sakura is a mother of that of Heian Jingu Shrine.

The building in the 1st picture is Shisinden and the one in the 2nd picture is Daigokuden. Both of them are halls play nearly the same role. So they have Sakura has the same name. Check the link below.

Find Starbucks Kyoto Sanjo-Ohashi. Across the street, there are 2 Kawzu Zakura trees.

Toji temple 東寺

Keigamon gate is located near a Koban and Toji Higashimon mae bus stop. Go through it.

Couples of minutes later, you’ll find the gate.

Over the gate, there is a Dainichi Doh temple and Kawazu Zakura trees are located next to it.

And near the pagoda, Kodo (3D mandala) , and the wall facing the east.

Unryuin temple 雲龍院

Near the main hall, the entrance gate and at the parking lot.

But Unryubai plum blossoms bloom in Kitano Tenmangu shrine. Usually, they bloom in early January, Kawazu Zakuras also bloom in late January.

Near Ichijo Modori Bashi, too.

The ones near Sanjo Ohashi bridge is also in Migoro but I don’t recommend to see them late at night, especially in weekend.

At Toji, they are in full bloom. Some flowers start falling but we can find some buds. I guess we can enjoy them in the night illumination event that starts on 3/16.

Near Sanjo Ohashi bridge, the second tree is in full bloom. The other is in 90％ bloom.

I guess when the Sakura night illumination of Toji starts, we cannot find fully blooming Kawzu Zakura there. If you want to see fully blooming ones, go to Sanjo Ohashi asap.

They are in 90％ bloom near Sanjo Ohashi bridge. Enjoy the earliest Yozakura (Sakura at night) 2024. Migoro is coming though the hard rain made some petals fall off.

We have warm days in this week and Kawzu Zakuras are in FULL BLOOM. 見頃に入りました。

The ones near the pagoda are in Migoro, the best time to admire. The night illumination of 2023 starts on 18/3. We couldn’t enjoy it with full bloomed ones.

The ones near Ekojo are also in Migoro.

Besides, the ones near Ichojo Modoribasi bridge are in 90％ bloom.

The ones in the pagoda are nearly booming. I suppose we could enjoy them at the night illumination.

Spring night illumination in Toji started yesterday. This year, we can enjoy Kawazu Zakura in the night illumination because they bloomed later than usual year.

Now almost all the Kawazu Zakura are on decline.

The ones near the pagoda of Toji are in full bloom but the ones near Kindo are on decline.

Near Ekojo, some flower became “Hazakura.” When many kinds of Sakura are on decline, leaves appears under flowers and we call them Hazakura.

The ones in Unryu-in temple also are in full bloom.

I send prayers for the people in the area hit by the earthquake yesterday and those who in suffer. 合掌

2 days ago, Tohoku region was hit by major earthquake and I didn’t feel to say anything is in bloom. So I revise this article today.

On 17th, Kawazu Zakura at Ichijo Modoribashi bridge is in full bloom.

And at Sanjo Ohashi bridge, too. I suppose the ones at Unryu-in temple and Philosopher’s path are not.

In 2022, the night illumination of Toji started on 19th. It ends on 17th April. I believe we can enjoy Kazazu Zakura, Someiyoshino, and Fuji Zakura illuminated.
