Autumn leaves in Kyoto; the latest report in 2017!!!

　In the middle of November in 2017, maple leaves in some place are in bloom. So, let me introduce the latest autumn colors in Kyoto. Every time I visit “Autumn leaves site”, I add the place on this article.

The report on the autumn leaves of Tenjuan temple, 2017

In every autumn, lots of people visit to Tenjuan temple though they pays scarce attention to it. It is one of the most underrated site in Kyoto. The maple leaves always turn red in early November. We can see the first so-called “Autumn colors” in Kyoto.

At Tenju-an temple, we can admire autumn leaves in two gardens; the dry garden and the garden around the pond. The leaves in these gardens go into bloom at different times; the leaves in the garden around the pond go into bloom around 1 week later than that of the dry garden.

8th November

In the dry garden

　I believe the days around 8th are perfect to enjoy the autumn leaves in the garden. On the east side of the garden, we can find very beautiful red maples. On the other hand, we can see stunning “gradualness”, the autumn colors Japanese people love, on the right side. I always adore the red leaves catching a glimpse of the gradualness, the green pine tree, and mosses.

Now let us make a small inspection of the red leaves in Tenjuan. The color seems as if it gave out warmth. I’m afraid you find the color blurred, but Japanese people find warmth in them. In addition, it was raining. Rain on the leaves put emphasis on the color.

Let me show you the good example of red autumn leaves. Take a look at the picture above. They are the maple trees in Korin-in temple. It was taken on a rainy day in the last year. The red in the maple tree in the picture is the most beautiful one in Kyoto. It is very bright red but we can not find “warmth” in it. We can see severe beauty but not find warmth.

On the contrary, we can enjoy bamboo trees, gradualness of the maple, and the main gate of Nanzenji-temple on the north side of the garden.

The garden around the pond

　In the garden, some leaves are in bloom but most of the maple trees are on the verge of turning their colors.

The garden has good appeal to us though almost all leaves still remain in green.

A couple of weeks later, we will see red and vermilion leaves floating on the surface of the pond.

15th Illumination

In the dry garden

　We love to see illuminated autumn leaves and many temples hold “Light-up (Made-in-Japnan-English)”, or illumination of autumn leaves. This year, the leaves began turn red earlier than usual year but the illumination was launched without missing the dead line. In the dim lighting the leaves gave out warmth.

The garden around the pond

　In the night time, we can enter the mail hall and have good views of the garden there. The trees were not in bloom. I will go there in a couple of days.
