螺髪
The small pieces on its head are Rahotsu hair. Only Nyorai has Rahotsu. Nyorai is a Buddhist Deity who reached the enlightenment.
Byakugo 白毫
The small ball on its forehead is Byakugo. A white hair makes the ball. It gives out rays when Daibutsu teaches Buddhism to people.
The hair is about 15′ in length.
Semuiin 施無畏印
Shape of a hand of Buddhist statue is called “In” which has meaning.
The right hand is in Semmuiin. It tells us “Don’t be afraid.”
Yoganin 与願印
The left hand is called “Yoganin.” It tells us “I make your hope come true.”
We put these In together and call them “Semui Yoganin.” It means “Don’t be afraid. You hope would come true.” This has something to do with the reason why emperor Shomu dicided to build Daibutsu.
光背(こうはい)
The gold plate behind Daibutsu is called “Kohai.” It stands for rays of wisdom. There are small statues Buddha, the enlightened person, hanging on it. Daibutsu is in a center of a world and many Buddha surround it.
Rengeza 蓮華座
As indicated before, Daibtusu sits on a lotus Daiza. The flower stands for “Rengezo world.” It is a pure land made by Birushanabustu (Daibutsu) to give any people their own peace of mind. It is believed that Rengezo world is on a huge lotus blooms in a vast ocean called Kosuikai.
Take a look at the inside of Rengezo world on the lotus on which Daibutsu sit. The Deity in the center of the first picture is Birushanabustu (Daibutsu). On the second picture, we can see Rengezo world on the lotus.
As I’ll show you later, Daibutsu was built in the 8th century. The petals in the photos escaped two fires narrowly and we can admire them today.
