Gomagi is a piece of wood found in a Buddhist ritual. It is a medium between deities and us. We write our name and wish on it and put it in a fire. This is called Gomakuyo (護摩供養). The video show us the one in Gion Matsuri. In Gozan Okuribi, we write our name and an illness we want to get rid of. Some believe the powder of the charcoal of the Gomagis make medicine.
In Daimonji, monks hold a ritual at Taishido located near the peak. The bonfires are lit with a candle used in the ritual.

Long time ago, a monk called Ennin, the founder of Saihoji temple located in the foot of the mountain, was on the way to Japan from China. The ship he was on was at the mercy of a hard rainstorm. He read out “Mamuamidabutsu (南無阿弥陀仏)” and was saved form the storm.

It’s hard to translate 南無阿弥陀仏. In this case, it means…something like “Save me Amitaba (Buddhist deity)!” or something like that.
