Somei Yoshino 染井吉野
- Bloom: Mid-March
- Migoro: Late-March or early-April
- Popular palace to see: Kiyomizudera and other places
Somei Yoshino is so-called Sakura.
When we say, “Sakura,” it means Somei Yoshino usually.
Somei Yoshino and others. Somei Yoshino lasts only a week. I guess the best time to admire lasts only a couple of days. We find Hakanasa (儚さ) in Somei Yoshino. Hakanasa is translated as ephemerality or short-liviving something but they don’t describe what we feel exactly. We can get rid of an idea, ah, nothing lasts forever. That’s the idea Japanese people have in common consciously or unconsciously. And Somei Yoshino, of course including other Sakuas, puts the idea into words. That’s one of the reasons we love Sakura, autumn leaves and the flora.
We can enjoy Somei Yoshino in many places in Kyoto but the most famous and popular place is Kiyomizu-dera temple.
Night illumination is available!
Omuro Zakuar 御室桜
- Bloom: 1st week of April
- Migoro: Mid-April
- Popular palace to see: Ninnaji temple and haradanien garden.
Omuro Zakura is late-blooming Sakura in Kyoto. Its tree is short and looks like a shrub. We can find it only Ninnjaji temple and Haradanien garden as far as I know.
Kitano Zakuar 北野桜
- Bloom: Around 7th of April
- Migoro: Mid-April
- Popular palace to see: ONLY in Kitano Tenmangu shrine.
Kitano Zakura is latest-blooming Sakura in Kyoto. In 2016, a lab found it is indigenous to Kitano Tenmanghu shrine. It tells spring is nearly ending and Shinryoku (late-spring and early summer) season is coming.
Aomomiji 青もみじ
- Bloom: Late-March
- Migoro: May and June
- Popular palace to see: Rurikoin, Toji temple, and other places.
Aomiji means autumn leaves in green. We can find them in many places. It starts to “bloom” in Shinryoku season. We love the season because we feel every thing, including our lives, is reborn and starts anew.
The most beautiful place is Rurikoin temple.
In that season, there are many events in Aomomijis. Kamo Kyokusui no En, Saiou dai Gyokei, and Aoi Matsrui are recommended.
At some temples like Toji, night illumination is available.
Autumn leaves 紅葉
- Bloom: Early November
- Migoro: Mid-November to early December
