Nijo castle 二条城

Nijo castle was constructed as a temporary residence of Shoguns of the Tokugawa Shogunate. In 1867, Tokugawa Yoshinobu, the last Tokugawa Shogun, decided to give up the plitical power the Shogunate had to emperor Meiji. Every spring, “Nijojo Sakura matsuri” is held there.

At Kamogawa river bank, there are many cherry blossom trees. It is located near Shijo Kawara machi downtown and Gion. No illumination is held but lots of lamp post has the same effect on them.

Hosenin temple 宝泉院
Highlight
Hosenin temple is only place we can enjoy Sakura night illumination in Ohara. It is one of the calmest place to admire Sakura.
Not like other places, Hosen in has a couple of Sakura trees. Thanks to that, we can focus on them. The garden is a so-called Gakubuchi Teien (Picture frame garden). It is an art to enjoy gardens. We consider the pillars and beams as a frame to make the scenery a picture.

Daigoji 醍醐寺
Highlight
Toyotomi Hideyoshi held “Daigono Hanmi” at Daigoji temple 5 month before his death. The monk of Daigoji found Hideyoshi’s end was near, he made the Hanami extraordinary as possible.
The most famous Sakura in Daigoji temple but the typhoon in the last year devastated it. It was a huge tree of 150 years old with exquiste blossoms. 合掌。

Byodoin temple 平等院
Highlight
Byodoin temple was a villa belonged to Fujiwara no Michjinaga, the most prosperous court noble in Japanses history. It was converted to a Buddhist temple in the 11th century.
The best time is twilight. Enjoy the white blossoms against the dark blue sky.
