Overview
Kenninji was founded by Eisai/ Yosai (栄西) who introduced Zen to Japan. It is a typical Zen temple and has beautiful gardens including so-called Zen garden/ Karesansui gardens.
And it has famous Fujin Raijinzu Byobu and we can see a replica.
The night illumination of Kenninji temple
The most beautiful place in Kenninji is Chontei garden. The ocean (or river) is painted in the sliding door emphasizes the colors of autumn leaves. In this garden, we can find three stones in any direction.
Daiyuen (Zen/ Karesansui garden) in not illuminated but it is extraordinary calm. We cannot visit Karesauni gardens at night.
The other side of the garden is illuminated. There is a lone tree with brilliant red leaves.
